Ashley C. Sawyer, Esq., is the policy director at Girls for Gender Equity (GGE) in Brooklyn, New York. Ashley’s career is focused on using the law to divest from prisons and invest in educational equity for youth of color. At GGE, Ashley ensures that the needs of girls and transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) youth are met through local and national policy. Ashley was a staff attorney at Youth Represent, where she led the reentry legal representation for girls and femmes incarcerated on Rikers Island. Ashley was a Stoneleigh Emerging Leader Fellow at Education Law Center-PA, and she did special education and juvenile justice policy work on behalf of incarcerated youth, including a project focused on the disproportionate discipline of Black girls in school. She is an alumna of the Howard University School of Law and Douglass College at Rutgers University. Ashley is an alumna of the National Juvenile Justice Network-Youth Justice Leadership Institute.
