Community Lawyering: Shifting The Vision of Power

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Community lawyering encourages collaboration and prevents dependency while encouraging the leadership of community members. The core elements are how a lawyer can integrate into the community in which the lawyer does advocacy work, the use of multifaceted approaches to problem solving, and the empowerment of community members. Additionally, we will discuss how to tailor your advocacy to address the specific needs of activists, community members, grassroots organizations, and smaller nonprofits. The presentation will teach strategies on how to elicit the community's own voice, creativity, and judgment on all matters, including legal strategy and advocacy. There will be discussion and examples on how to use the skill sets required for community lawyering: interpersonal skills, communication skills, teamwork, language skills, and ability to adapt to a specific client.
