Defender offices that employ or otherwise partner with formerly incarcerated clients have been able to accomplish enhanced client representation in various forms – from connecting current clients with care services to helping defenders understand how to engage in participatory defense, utilize motivational interviewing, and effective strategies for building trust with clients. The results are something to talk about and imagine ways to bring these strategies into more defender offices. Supporting reentry should start at home with more defender offices relying on the lived experience of former clients. Come learn, share your experiences, and take away new ideas for including the invaluable wisdom of our clients everywhere.
