This presentation will address issues faced by women, girls, and non-binary people in the criminal legal system with an emphasis on their victimization and the work being done in New York to combat the systemic criminalization of trauma. This session will be one part formal presentation, addressing the aforementioned, as well as details of unique projects each presenter spearheads aimed at cultural shifts in the courts and education system. The second part will be interactive brainstorming with an emphasis on best practices, movement building, and resource sharing with other advocates engaged in similar work or who would like to see this work done in their jurisdictions. In this second section, we will discuss drawing from clinical interventions to provide defense that is both effective and trauma-informed.
