Jane-Roberte Sampeur is a staff attorney and legal coordinator of the Women’s Pretrial Release Initiative, which is housed in the Decarceration Project at the Legal Aid Society. Her work includes direct bail representation, special litigation, and bail reform policy. She works closely with social workers and community-based service providers to ensure direct connections to holistic services for her clients in the community, recognizing that effective representation includes addressing the collateral consequences of arrest and detention. She began her career practicing on Rikers Island defending individuals in parole revocation proceeding. She then practiced as a criminal defense attorney in the Legal Aid Society’s Brooklyn office, where she represented people accused of high-level felonies and misdemeanors. She is an active voice for reform within the defense community in New York.
