Katherine DeZengotita has worked as a defense attorney and as a policy advocate in the juvenile and criminal justice fields since graduating from law school in 2005. She represented adults in criminal court at the Defender Association in Seattle, Washington, and, more recently, spent six years representing adolescents in delinquency matters at the Legal Aid Society in New York City. Kate also spent several years at the Vera Institute of Justice's Center on Youth Justice, focusing on juvenile justice policy reform by providing technical assistance to state and local jurisdictions around the country. Later, as an attorney with the Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Rights Practice’s Special Litigation and Law Reform Unit, she worked on impact litigation and legislative advocacy in the juvenile justice and child welfare fields. Kate is now an attorney with the New York County Defender Services' Juvenile Defense Unit, where she represents young people being prosecuted in both juvenile and adult criminal court under New York State’s new “Raise the Age” statute.
