Lauren Choate

St. Louis University School of Law Criminal Defense Clinic
St. Louis MO
Lauren Choate is a mental health social worker at Saint Louis University School of Law Criminal Defense Clinic, which combines law and social work in a unique approach to criminal representation. With an understanding that many people find themselves involved with the criminal justice system because of poverty, mental illness, and trauma, she works with clients to address the collateral consequences of criminal justice involvement and issues that may keep them in the revolving door of the criminal courts. She also supervises Master of Social Work students who work with law students on sentencing advocacy and mitigation work in state and federal cases. She previously worked at Washington University's Brown School of Social Work as part of a research team studying prison decarceration practices and designing and implementing re-entry classes in Missouri prisons.
